Ask, and it shall be given to you;
seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. Matt.

LOCAL BENEVOLENCE
A challenge confronts every congregation
in arriving at a decision regarding providing financial assistance to those
who request it. I don't have all the answers but there are some principles
and concepts that may assist in the decision making process:
-
Chrsitians are not always obligated
to feed a hungry man. II Thessalonians 3:10 teaches man's responsibility
to work and genesis 2:15 established the fact that man was created to work.
Willful failure to do so is rebellion against God.
-
"It is better to feed or assist
ten undeserving people than to fail to feed or assist one who is deserving."
That sounds good but overlooks some scriptural considerations. God doesn't
reason like that in other areas. The selection of Elders -- Is it better
to select five unworthy men rather than risk refusing the office to one
who is worthy? The point being we are to examine each candidate carefully
and endeavor always to make the right decision.
-
Christians should maintain a spirit
of generosity realizing how much they are blessed. When we are generous
with others, God is generous with us.
-
Christians should be free of unrighteous
judging. That's John 7:24. Don't refuse financial assistance to someone
who simply looks like a professional freeloader. Ask questions, investigate
and then make a decision.
The concluding principle is
found in I Corinthians 4:2, "Moreover it is required in stewards, that
a man be found faithful."
